The Interview Process: Speed Dating in the Corporate world

January 31, 2007 · 1 Comment

Yesterday I was part of an interview process. Basically, I was hiring the person who would be my boss and someone I not only would have to work very closely with, but someone I would hand over the reins of a project I had worked on for the past 6 months.

The official face to face interview lasted hours and involved the ‘applicant’ sitting in a room being interogated by 6 people from various departments. Despite the fact that we had interviewed him over the phone numerous times and had also worked with him, we flew him into NY, made him work on an emergency project on the first day then submitted him to hours of questioning.

So why the long process? Having been involved with many recruiting endeavors, I find that its not so much the skills or the experience but more about the person and their fit into the organization and team. Yes, they most have the skills neccessary, but in many ways, that is not the indicator how long they will stay or how much they will contribute. If a workplace was ‘perfect’ then we probably could just read off resumes and select someone. But there is no perfect workplace and there is no perfect project. Like entering into a relationship, you look for someone who will complement and enhance your strengths while overcoming (or at least enduring) the weaknesses.

As an interviewee, you already know what the relationship is like. You know all the bad sides. Perhaps it is the best policy to scare the living daylights out of a potential hire, take out all the glam, lay your cards bare on the table and see if he or she STILL wants the job. At many dotcoms, the hiring process is partly about selling the company. Usually the turnover rate at these companies are high. Its NOT normal for a person to leave a company after less than a year. Its costly and its bad for morale. Some people seem to treat the hiring process like a date. Wow the person with a fancy restaurant, padded bra, make-up, shaved body parts, unending attention and promise them the world. Then one day that person wakes up screaming next to someone they hardly recognize….hmmmm.

So how can we cut through the bull and really figure out WHO it is that we are hiring. The organization I am a part of, submitted this poor man to a personality index test. Is it fair? Well probably not, if that is your sole source of information for the hire. But I have heard of handwriting samples, astrology readings and many other dubious requirements.

Referrals? They work but you always have to take them with a grain of salt. A referral generally will not be the person’s enemy. Sometimes the refferal themselves are a good indicator of the personality of the applicant. (Is this person intelligent? sincere? successful? Do they actually care about the applicant?) Also if the refferal has nothing bad at all to say about the hiree, that immediately sends off alarms for me. (No one is perfect) Also be sure to call up a referral that is NOT on the list :-)

Lastly, I always tend to look at their last job very closely. Like dating, after a while, you want to know what went wrong with the ex. Why did they leave? Usually this is a very good indicator of the fit. Its not just about what they can provide for you, but also what you can provide them. What are they looking for in a job? How long were they at that job? WHY ARE YOU LEAVING?

A few last thoughts on the hiring process. I know I’ve made some mistakes. But once you hire someone, you (as an organization) are responsible for that person. If it clearly doesn’t work out…end it … as quickly as possible.

Oh yeah? Anyone know any good programmers? project managers? designers? instructional designers with human rights knowledge? (man, its a tough market out there)

Read the book, or watch the movie…Children of Men

January 29, 2007 · Leave a Comment

children.jpgThe Children of Men. Yeah so I saw the preview to the movie many months back and contrary to most people’s reactions, I thought “wow that looks really interesting, I think I’ll buy the book” And so I did. I read the entire thing before I saw the movie. Its not the best book ever, but the question of what would happen if there were no more children in the world is an intriguing one.

The book lays down a deteriorating world of chaos, mayhem and a general sense of why bother? All governing systems, order and infrastructure have broken down. England relies on the ’slave labor’ of immigrants, only to send them back once they have done their due. Government sanctioned suicide (Quietus) ceremonies, educational programs (to keep people occupied?) and of course a world full of zealots and fire breathers.

If you have read the book and watched the movie, no doubt you will know that they are completely different. Perhaps only the central themes are the same but the plot and characters are vastly different. I was quite looking forward to how they were going to translate all the ideas and questions from the book into a movie. Well I guess the answer is to concentrate the entire movie on the ‘action packed’ last half of the book.

The movie itself is quite enjoyable. Violent at times, it does have some very interesting details that are surprising. (Blood drops on the camera, Theo running around with no shoes)

The book never really explained why there was such choas in the world. Why wouldn’t people just hang out and enjoy whatever time they had left? Why would they run around burning and bombing things? If they were that angry or felt there was no more hope, why wouldn’t they just peacefully kill themselves? Anyways, if you want to read the book, its definitely an interesting Scifi/Fantasy book. Its written by P.D. James (who BTW I just realized was a woman!)

Yoga teachers

January 23, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Yesterday was my first time doing bikram two days in a row. Since the beginning of this year I have been on a good track and doing yoga quite frequently. (Not that its getting any easier) I generally go to the LES or Williamsburg studios. After a while, you tend to make up a list of teachers that you like and ones that you prefer to avoid.

In general, I like teachers who remember my name and give good pose corrections. Generally in additional to the usual things that all teachers say…they have special details or a new way of trying things that can make you realize something new. They tend to push you the hardest but also know when to let up and let you rest without feeling guilty. At LES, I like Nick. He is very attentive and gives great feedback. Trish is know for having the hottest room in all of NY. She remembers EVRYONE’s names, gives a lot of great encouragement and overall good vibes. Shannon is also great (her room is not so hot…but she has a very calming effect) She won this year’s tri-state yoga competition. She was awesome…very inspiring.

Christian teaches at Williamsburg and so far he is one of my favorites there except that recently he has been known to break out into song during the savasana. Thats a little distracting to me…but hey its w.burg, what can you do? Its a shame that the good teachers are at LES isn’t as convenient as the willaimsburg studio, the quality of the studio and the teachers there are really awesome.

First post of the year…2007 the year to come

January 12, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Its been a long time since my last post. I have written ‘blog posts’ in my mind but never got around to it. So here is my 2007 post.

In 2007 I will:

  • Move to the westcoast
  • Work on starting a family
  • Continue working on my health
  • Either build up my company seriously…or do the fulltime thing for a year
  • Go on a 6 week work break
  • Build up my savings and investments
  • Hire a financial consultant (enough of reading the books, I want someone just to tell me what to do!)

I am not sure if that constitutes a resolutions list. Here’s a list of predictions that may not neccesarily have to do with me personally.

  • My friend lreflection is leaving NY and going on a 6 month soul searching trip. I envy her!!
  • My friend Oum will probably have a baby. She’s really worked hard on her health this past year and she looks great (thanks to the South beach Diet and Bikram Yoga)
  • The iPhone won’t be every person’s wet dream phone
  • Web 2.0 bubble is finally going to collapse (isn’t it due?)
